GPS systems are the new device used to assist people when lost in new territories world wide. These systems prove far superior to maps because they actually tell you how to find where you are trying to step by step. They are great for people who have trouble with maps, road signs, and directions. It doesn’t matter if you are in the middle of the wilderness or on the interstate, a GPS system can help you.

GPS stands for global positioning system. The system allows a person to tell where they are in the world via satellite. These satellites track the user’s location and give a detailed map of the area around where the user is located.

If the user of a GPS system would like to find a route to a destination and only know the address of their desired destination a GPS system can be used to lead the way. Simply plug the address of the desired location in to the device and the system will provide the user with turn by turn directions the entire way there.

GPS systems can even be used to find facilities with a city such as places to eat. If the user is new to a city and needs someplace to eat, yet has no idea what restaurants the city has to offer he can use his GPS. Just plug in the name of the city and all of the eating locations will be listed, as well as directions.

The cost of a GPS system can vary depending on the brand, function, and quality. Some GPS systems can be bought for as little as fifty dollars. Systems for this price would most likely be handhelds, used for hiking, hunting, and other outdoor activities. A GPS intended to be installed in automobiles will most likely range within a few hundred dollars. GPS systems that are intended for open sea navigating can cost all the way up to ten thousand dollars. These systems are top of the market and only used by people who absolutely need to have them.

Four common variations of GPS systems exist. They consist of portable outdoor units, the marine system, the automobile navigation system, and the PDA hybrid system. The portable outdoor unit is handheld and easily used on the move. It can be used during travel in motor vehicles but is not intended for such uses. Campers have found great use for this device because they are not required to hire guides, read maps, or depend on confusing trail signs to find there way around when hiking in the woods.

Automobile navigation systems can be appreciated by anyone who travels frequently by car. Business trips, family vacation, and road trips can all be made much easier by these systems. It is like having a very polite guide tell you turn by turn which way to go and how far away you still have to go. Beware these systems can also tell you if you are breaking any traffic laws and can get annoying. PDA hybrid systems are a combination of portable systems can devices intended for automobiles.

Marine systems and automobile navigation systems are both used when traveling long distances. Marine systems are used by fishermen and other people required traveling in to the ocean. These systems are some of the most expensive because it is the most important to have accurate. If a marine system failed a poor sailor could find themselves stranded at sea.
