There are many benefits of going the extra mile to feed your dog high quality dog food. From the obvious health and well being to their energy levels and physical appearance as well as performance levels. The number one draw back being the cost difference.

But no matter what you spend, the way you like to be treated should be the way you treat your animals if not better. When you buy the inexpensive brand you know the saying \”you get what you pay for.\” Most veterinarians say these inexpensive brands would compare to taking a piece of cardboard, dipping it in gravy and serving it to your most beloved animal. All this does is it fills their stomachs but it does not give them the nutrition most animals need to thrive. Once your pet gets use to all the high levels of nutrition and all the good calories to go along with it, they will start to eat less than before.

The long and short term benefits of this upgrade are innumerable. Higher quality foods, including home made dog food recipes which are abundant and easy to find online if you search for \”home made dog food\”, provide your animal with a shinier coat, clear eyes, normal bowel movements and a generally happier disposition.

Many dogs are allergic to the lower quality ingredients found in cheap dog food. You might find that with a better dog food your pet will have less \”itchies\” and shed far less as well. Better health decreases the amount of yeast in the ears which some breeds are prone to. Also once they have the nutrients they need their bodies will be capable of healing faster after a surgery, accident or procedure.

Believe it or not, they will actually learn quicker as well. Isn’t your mind and body more in tune when you feed yourself well, instead of starving, or living on a diet of \”junk food\”? It is the same with our dogs. A high quality dog food will improve their minds as well as their bodies.

I am the proud owner of a Saint Bernard. I adopted him after a semi truck had struck him, and he walked away with minor scratches. After they put some stitches on him his owner decided to dump him at the nearest shelter since he was not considered a \”show quality\” dog any more. When we bought him home we kept him on the same food the shelter had him on. He had a few bare spots on his legs and back area from a rash he acquired at the kennel. So I decided to bring him back to the shelter to see what they would recommend for this rash, they gave me a simple ointment to apply so I did for two weeks with no avail, he even started having loose bowel movement, so I decided to bring him to the vet. The vet came out and told me that he was not getting enough protein in his diet, so I upgraded to the next expensive brand thinking about a 180 lbs dog would leave me homeless but his rashes got better and a couple of them even went away.

It wasn’t until I bit the bullet and went in for the higher quality food that I saw the best results. After 3 weeks his raw and tender spots were completely healed, his itchy ears were under control and his demeanor had calmed immensely. Now he has a full, gorgeous coat and has gained almost 50 pounds.

I am a firm believer that your results are determined by what you put into it. Animals need to have a good diet as much or more than humans do. It’s essential in every aspect of their being and to cheap out on the care you provide them is not only unnecessary and detrimental, but uncaring and neglectful.
