What could you buy for $10 a month in 1923? That was the amount paid for the rental of the little office in Los Angeles where Walt Disney and his brother, Roy started what is known today as the Walt Disney Company. This company began with animated films which were called ALICE COMEDIES. After only four months, a move was made to a larger space where the name of the company became Disney Brothers Studio.

Only a year later, a lot was bought in the Silver Lake district and a new studio was underway. In 1928 our beloved mouse was born. Following Mickey were Pluto, Goofy, Donald Duck, and the many more Disney favorites everyone has come to love. With the Disney characters becoming more popular every day, a place to build the many props that were required for the Disney family became essential. The Back Lot became that place. The shops were built to produce the many different crafts that were a much needed part of the live productions.

Among the edifices on the Back Lot were those used for plumbing, electrical, plaster shops, and storehouses for thousands of props. A lot of the plaster figures that are used in Disneyland and Walt Disney World were made here. With the need for complete buildings rather than just the bits and pieces of earlier times, the filming industry began to build whole sets in response to the popularity of location filming. Over the last 30 plus years the back lot has housed the sets for many movies including “Darby O’Gill and the Little People,” “The Love Bug,” “The Apple Dumpling Gang,” and “Those Calloways” among others.
