When you are looking at how to train a Labrador, you’ll find plenty of different options available to you and plenty of resources. If you have a Labrador, you should be aware that one of the first things that you need to deal with is jumping. Taking a look at how to train a Labrador can help you stop the jumping habits and create a better-behaved pet overall.
When thinking about how to train a Labrador, the first thing to think about is the breed itself. Though Labradors are bred to be gun dogs, and they have a great reputation as service and working dogs, they are also excellent pets. They are among the most popular breeds in both the United States and the United Kingdom, and it is easy to see why.
Learning how to train a labrador is not very difficult. There are very intelligent dogs who take and follow direction really well so once you communicate to them what you want they pick it fairly quickly. However, they’re also very exuberant creatures with tons of energy which is where all that jumping comes from.
So why is your Labrador jumping on you anyway? More than likely he’s just excited and being friendly. Unlike some dogs who like to use jumping to show dominance, a Labrador is most likely just showing you his pleasure at seeing you.
When you begin training your Labrador not to jump on people, the key is to be consistent. You must discourage jumping in all instances. Pick a command and use it at all times to teach him not to jump.
Labradors love attention so when he jumps on you give him the command not to jump and show your displeasure by moving away from. This should let him know that you were displeased with his actions.
It’s also a good idea to give him praise when he returns his paws to the ground. Positive reinforcement is great especially when dealing with a Labrador since he loves praise. Give him a big hug and let him know he did a good job.
Learning how to train a Labrador to keep his paws on the ground can be a fun and fairly simple process with a little effort, patience, and lots of love.
