What makes GPS the vehicle tracking system of choice among civilians? Predictably enough, it’s its efficiency.
GPS is currently the only Global National Satellite System (GNSS) in the world that is fully operational. Its advanced satellite system is second only to none. The best part of GPS, however, is that it is being regulated and maintained exclusively by the government. What does this mean to you, the regular civilian/motorist? Well, it means that its navigational services are completely cost-effective for you, making GPS a very reliable and attractive protocol for vehicle tracking.
Most vehicle tracking systems utilize some other communication protocols between the transmitter and the remote controller, protocols such as radio frequencies or GPRS. Examples of a radio-frequency-type protocol system are the LoJack and the LORAN vehicle tracking systems. The GPS, on the other hand, utilizes satellite frequencies in the form of microwave signals, transmitted by at least 24 medium Earth orbit satellites that allows the remote controller to determine the precise location, direction and speed of the transmitter. All this is use of sophisticated technology is free-of-charge, which should explain the popularity of the GPS among navigational systems that are used at a civilian level.
It should be noted that although the GPS is a satellite-based navigational system, direct line of sight with the sky is not necessary in maintaining a strong signal. Even vehicles that are traveling through tunnels are still easily defined by the GPS.
Aside from vehicle tracking, GPS can also be used for other purposes. For example, navigational gears used in hiking and outdoor activities such as camping can benefit immensely from GPS. It can also be used in geographic applications such as analyzing gravity levels of the planet’s surface and checking atmospheric conditions, making it an essential tool in meteorological studies.
