Distance education can be a great opportunity for busy individuals who can’t afford to give up their jobs and home life in order to further their careers.

Unfortunately, an on-line education isn’t for everyone. In order to succeed, it takes an individual who is a dedicated self-starter with multi-tasking skills. Before embarking on such a major career move, it is imperative to find out if you have what it takes to succeed in an on-line program.

Distance learning students need to be able to work on their own; without close supervision or interaction with other students. Distance classes take place through a variety of mediums including e-mail, online message boards and snail mail. There is often little or no opportunity for face-to-face interaction between student and instructor.

Communication is key when it comes to having a successful distance learning experience. Online students need to be comfortable using online methods of communications, such as email and instant messaging. Students need to be proactive when it comes to classroom situations and never hesitate to ask questions or request feedback. Good communication is essential when it comes to succeeding in distance learning.

Good writing skills are also important when it comes to distance education. Since most assignments and classroom interaction takes place using the written word, distance learners need strong writing skills. Posting on online bulletin boards and email communication requires clear concise writing which can quickly convey the student’s needs and thoughts. In an online environment, mis-communication can lead to missed deadlines, failed assignments and failure.

On-line students need organizational skills in order to set up and follow their own set of study schedules. This takes a large amount of discipline that many people simply do not have. Students need the ability to block out ringing telephones, demanding family members and a host of other distractions while concentrating on the task at hand. This skill is essential for anyone attempting to earn an on-line degree.

Succeeding at an on-line education program is the responsibility of the student. Students need to create their own schedules and study times, in and around their busy schedules. Some people enjoy the freedom that this type of educational setting creates, others need a more structured traditional environment.

While many people dream of the freedom of setting their own schedule and working from home, the reality is that not everyone has what it takes to make it in an online education program. Dedicated self-starters who understand that their educational success lies in their hands can succeed as online students. An online education is not for everyone; take the time to do a complete self-evaluation before investing in a distance education program.
